My work is a physical and conceptual interpretation of the language of touch. I use the direct sensory approach of rubbing or touching a surface to produce a tangible, physical documentation. The only tools I use are my hands. I document historic sites and surfaces, some of which no longer exist. For me, rubbings are also a vehicle for evoking that which is immaterial, invisible, or voiceless. Using chemical processes, I transform my imagery into a blueprint of itself, hinting at the essence manifested in each surface.
The lifting of a surface, the witnessing of a moment, the marking of place: these are the revelatory traits of rubbings. By highlighting aspects of the subject that may not be visible to the naked eye, rubbings can be more revealing than the subject itself. Rubbings anchor us with touch while at the same time evoking the immaterial. For me, these works do not operate just as images or traces of my material processes. They are repositories of touch.
